This Is Why Your Anxiety Feels So Unmanaged
Oct 31, 2021If you've ever wondered whyyyy TF your anxiety can seem so bad, especially for how high functioning, hard-working, and productive you are,
you're not alone.
Something I've noticed about the highest achieving, most driven, exceptional women I know, is that they have BIG expectations for themselves and how they show up in the world.
They strive to be the best mother, partner, employee, friend, daughter, and community member they can be.
And that's a beautiful thing.
But what happens when that desire, work ethic, and the 987 million to-dos on our list are driven by an inherent belief that deep down says we're not enough and never will be?
Big-time anxiety.
Burnout.
A constant chasing, pushing and hustling that never ends in actually feeling satisfied, at peace, and like we're fully living.
If lately, you've been feeling...
- Not remotely grounded in the present moment. Your racing mind just won't sftu. It's worst when you don't have anything 'productive' to do, or when you lay down to go to sleep at night.
- Easily overwhelmed. After a full day of work or a social activity on the weekend, you're ready to collapse on the couch and not move for the rest of the day. More days than not you feel cranky, irritable, and on edge even though 'everything in my life is good.'
- Like nothing you do is ever enough. Your inner perfectionist takes over constantly reminding you that no matter how hard you work, nothing you've done, accomplished, or showed up for is good enough.
It's possible that your brain has been spiraling down the 'I'm not enough and never will be' path for a while.
While this spiral can certainly be influenced by physiological factors like inflammation, imbalanced hormones, and neurotransmitters, etc., the following 3 factors are alarmingly overlooked and play a critical role.
3 Possible Contributing Factors of Your Anxiety:
- Your nervous system is dysregulated. Generational and lived trauma, too little sleep, too much caffeine, and alcohol, not enough nutrient-dense foods, and simply existing in a sensitive body in our modern world can leave our nervous systems perpetually hijacked. They're always ON, scanning for possible danger and never allowing our bodies to feel safe and grounded.
- You were never taught how to feel your feelings. Most of us were never taught healthy emotional self-care. We learned to stuff down, push through and numb our feelings no matter the cost. And that works, until it doesn't. Until our feelings make their way out in angry outbursts, panic attacks, deep depressions, and our systems totally disengaging and turning on autopilot.
- The standards and expectations of our society weren't designed for you to thrive. Our patriarchal society values productivity, hard work, and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps more than anything else. The expectation to show up 24/7, engage in minimal self-care only after you've earned it, and take care of everyone else in your life before yourself is literally killing men and women.
I've found addressing these factors to be particularly potent for my clients who've tried therapy, exercising more, and medication but are still left feeling like they're struggling.
The problem isn't YOU. The problem is systemic. It's generational and steeped in our society.
AND, allowing yourself to find the freedom that comes from regulating your nervous system, feeling your feelings, and finding the rituals, rhythms, and routines that actually serve you is life-changing.
It's what allows you to know, feel, and embody with your entire being your total, absolute enoughness, exactly as you are.

1. On a scale of 1-10 how grounded, calm, and in my body do I feel on a daily basis?
2. How do I feel my feelings? Which feelings do I allow myself to feel and which ones do I numb?
3. What expectations in my work/productivity, body, and relationships have I been holding myself to that simply aren't serving me?
